Database Update

Geometry Enhancement Program

Client

A US client with more than 20 years of experience in data management and compilation, and has developed premier map databases that provide the foundation for location-based applications, including in-car navigation, Internet and wireless services, AVL and call-center services.

Business Need

The client wished to enhance accuracy and add attributes, to its current vector database offering comprising streets, railroads and water features, and provide this value add to the growing markets of ‘car navigation systems’ and ’location based services’.

The client wanted to graphically enhance spatial accuracy and geometrical shapes of the street networks in order to ensure that the user-interface represented a real world situation akin to an aerial imagery. Related attributes of the earlier data set were to be retained by this graphically enhanced data set. The client also wanted to enhance transport routing parameters as per its own modeling specifications. This entire exercise, covering approximately 70% of the US population, was to be carried out in a very short time frame.

Solution

RMSI and the client conducted a user needs assessment, as an integrated team and designed a complete set of interactive processes for this project.

RMSI developed a proprietary methodology for interactive conflation of newly captured vectors from aerial imageries, and attributes attached to the earlier vector data.

The total solution included capturing of raw vectors for streets, railroads and water features, as perceived from real world aerial imagery of the USA, interactive conflation, re-appropriation, and enhancement of the transport attributes.

The client’s modeling specifications were kept in mind throughout the process. A QA suite of algorithmic checks at RMSI and the client site ensured quality output. An automated work management system was developed in-house, for work distribution, work and skill-set tracking, and real time project monitoring.

Benefits

The client, within the prescribed time limit, received up-to-date and precise street, railroad, and water vectors with duly enhanced attributes. The automated work management system meant for project monitoring and helped in timely delivery of the project.

The client provided this updated data set to its clients as part of its value add offerings, thus retaining its leading position as a quality supplier of accurate street network data.
