Sports Enthusiasts in England
Now See Sport Facilities in New Light - RMSI Develops
Facility Information System
NEWARK CA, June 27, 2005:
The UK government agency Sport England is responsible
for the advancement of athletic opportunity throughout
the British Isles. When the need became apparent
for a consolidated and publicly available information
source on sporting facilities in England, one
of many challenges was dealing with various sports
federations, each of which maintained their own
information. And many federations held to a clear
if misguided interest in maintaining distinct
data sets. However, eventually all parties agreed
that the sporting public in England was suffering
from inconsistent information, widely varying
quality and accuracy, and being delivered in different
formats.
A bid was put out for creation of a single authoritative
database of the 10,000 sports facilities in England,
to be called Active Places. The goal was to make
an Active Places database and website available
within six months of the commencement of work.
RMSI, a global IT services company, provided project
software solutions in cooperation with other consortium
members.
As envisioned, Active Places was designed to
allow:
- Auditing of existing sports facilities to
monitor such indices as level of usage.
- Allow future investments in facilities to
be made based on a more complete knowledge of
existing sports facilities by geography, sport
discipline, and usage.
- Uniform and easily accessed information for
the general public on England’s sports
facilities.
Winning the bid and delivering on the above promise
was a consortium of RMSI, Landmark Information
Group and Leisure Database Company. Together they
successfully provided rapid development of a sports
data model, data matching and synchronization
of prime datasets within the required timeframe
