Case Study - Transforming Urban Planning with Advanced Geospatial Data Management

Client

Our client requires geospatial data management, which is crucial in urban planning, monitoring, and managing assets and spatial decision-making. It will serve as a bridge between data acquisition, modeling, visualization, and analysis. They currently maintain a large volume of geospatial data in an ArcGIS enterprise environment, making data management critical for enabling employees to find and use the data efficiently for analysis and decision-making.

Challenges

A large volume of data to be increased in the future, lack of integrated view, and late decision-making
The project faced significant challenges in managing the vast and growing volume of geospatial data. Continuous data availability, efficient data search, and seamless data integration were paramount. Ensuring users could quickly locate and utilize this data for analysis and decision-making was critical to the project’s success.

Objectives

A data-driven approach that focuses on improving user experience from a modern data platform
  • Improve user experience
  • Increase team engagement
  • Enhance visualization capabilities
  • Facilitate communication of GIS capabilities and initiatives
  • Enable geospatial data search and download
  • Aid decision-making across the organization
  • Provide a consolidated view of geospatial data for all GIS needs

Solution

Modernize data and simplify insight
RMSI provided a comprehensive solution by breaking down the project into four workstreams over a development period of six months, followed by six months of warranty and maintenance.
  1. Development of a GIS Website (Workstream-1):
    • Created a front-end application to increase user engagement and improve communication of GIS capabilities and initiatives.
    • The website features interactive user help, user behavior analytics, SharePoint document integration, and links to Map Viewer and Data Explorer applications.
    • It displays sector-wise bifurcation of geospatial data and applications and includes an administration panel for data and service control.
  2. Development of Map Viewer Web Application (Workstream-2):
    • Developed a web-based application using ArcGIS Web App Builder, providing access to various data layers related to different sectors.
    • The application includes tools and widgets for data viewing, analyzing, comparing, querying, and visualizing.
    • Features SSO Authentication, User Behavior Analytics, and Azure Chatbot service
  3. Development of GIS Data Explorer Web Application (Workstream-3):
    • Created a web-based application allowing authenticated users to explore and export datasets from the ArcGIS enterprise portal.
    • Provided options to search and export (clip and ship) relevant geospatial data in OGC-supported formats, including GDB, SHP, and KML.
  4. Creation of Aesthetic Web Maps/Map Products (Workstream-4):
    • Designed map products in line with the project’s branding, including base maps in vector tile format with dynamic labeling in English and Arabic.
    • Integrated POI layers and ensured the design matched the project’s aesthetic standards.

Impact

The comprehensive geospatial data management solution provided by RMSI significantly improved data accessibility, user engagement, and decision-making capabilities. The project enabled the efficient management of urban planning and infrastructure development, ensuring the futuristic city could achieve its vision of a sustainable, well-planned urban environment.
